Cockrell       Here offered is a vintage book from 1884 which is signed by the Confederate Civil War General and 5 time Missouri Senator  Francis M. Cockrell.   Here are a couple of photos of the man for reference only.  The book is fully entitled;  In the Senate of the United States.  Standing Rules for Conducting Business in the Senate of the United States reported by The Committee on Rules  with Amendments to March 24, 1884.  Published by the Government Printing Office , Washington , 1884.   The book is 100% intact and in extremely fine condition for the age with tight spine and lightly discolored front.  You can see the condition in our photos. Measuring appx 6″ x 9 1/8″.  It has 43 pps with an index to the rules in the rear of the book.     It is an Original publication and Rare and the signature of the well known Civil War soldier and General Cockrell.  A bit about Cockrell’s Civil War days;  At the beginning of the American Civil War in 1861, Cockrell joined the Confederate Army as a captain. He was an important leader in the Vicksburg Campaign and was wounded in the hand by an exploding shell during the Siege of Vicksburg. He was promoted to brigadier general on July 18, 1863.   In April 1865, shortly before the end of the war, Cockrell was captured in Alabama, but was paroled after a few weeks. He returned to his law practice in Missouri.   Cockrell (1834-1915) served in the Confederate Army and was appointed Brigadier General in 1863. He was wounded five times and was captured three times, the last at Fort Blakeley, Alabama, on April 9, 1865, the day Lee surrendered. On May 14, 1865, he was paroled. Cockrell represented Missouri in the U.S. Senate from 1875 to 1905, serving as Democratic Minority Leader from 1903 to 1905.   As stated he was a 5 time U.S. Senator for Missouri.  It really does tell the tale about post Civil War Missouri and their sentiments.   Also Cockrell was instrumental in getting Frank James and the Youngers paroled or pardoned.  I guess it paid even then to know someone in High Places.    He had an illustrious career and was obviously well liked and known.  His signature alone commands nearly $1000.   Check out our other extremely rare books we have listed  on eBay and this website.  One entitled and hand signed    The Militia  by William T. Sherman.  Both very Rare and collectible! All of these booklets were owned by a lawyer and Captain in the Civil War from Macon, Missouri named  William VanCleve.   Van Cleve was the Brig. Gen of the 2nd Brigade National Guard of Missouri in the 1880′s.  Check out our other listings to find out more about him as well.   Add them all to your collection of Missouri Civil War memorabilia!!!

Jaki, OSB (August 17, 1924, Gy?r – April 7, 2009, Madrid)[1][2] was a Benedictine priest and Distinguished Professor of Physics at Seton Hall University, New Jersey since 1975. He was a leading thinker in the philosophy of science, theology, and on issues where the two disciplines meet and diverge. CareerAfter completing undergraduate training in philosophy, theology and mathematics, Father Jaki did graduate work in theology and physics and gained doctorates in theology from the Pontifical Institute in Rome (1950), and in physics from Fordham University (1958), where he studied under the Nobel laureate Victor Hess, the co-discoverer of cosmic rays. He also did post-doctoral research in Philosophy of Science at Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Princeton University and Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton. Father Jaki authored more than two dozen books on the relation between modern science and orthodox Christianity. He was Fremantle Lecturer at Balliol College, Oxford (1977), Hoyt Fellow at Yale University (1980) and Farmington Institute Lecturer at Oxford University (1988–1989). He was the Gifford Lecturer at Edinburgh University in 1974-75 and 1975-76. In 1987, he was awarded the Templeton Prize for furthering understanding of science and religion. Jaki was also among the first to claim that Gödel’s incompleteness theorem is relevant for theories of everything (TOE) in theoretical physics. Gödel’s theorem states that any mathematical theory that includes certain basic facts of number theory (and is computably enumerable, i.e. whose formulas can be explicitly listed) will be either incomplete or inconsistent. Since any ‘theory of everything’ will certainly be consistent, it must be either incomplete or unable to prove basic facts about the integers. Here offered is a vintage booklet of 26 pps being appx 6 1/4" x 9 3/8" fully entitled   "The Militia"  by William T. Sherman . This unique booklet was sent we believe to the Union Captain William VanCleve of Macon Missouri and as you can see on the front cover  signed by Sherman himself.  This is his actual signature , not a facsimile print but his actual signature in dark blue ink.  Saying   Compliments of   W. T. Sherman   General. The book is 100% intact with both covers  , light soiling and corner bumps and rubs. The book is bright and clean internally and has been bi-folded probably for shipping. It really is in extremely good condition and is a very Rare publication.  The article was 1st printed in the Journal of the Military Service Institution of the United States , Vol. , No. 21, March 1885. This booklet like many of the time was pulled out by a publisher and printed singularily from the original publication.  The man that had owned this , William VanCleve was an early lawyer here in Macon , Missouri and also was the Commanding Brigadier General of the National Guard of Missouri in 1886.  Macon happened to be the Headquarters of the 2nd Brigade of the N.G.M. Van Cleve himself was as stated a Captain in the Civil War and was based here out of Macon. His son also William VanCleve later grew up also as a prominent Lawyer here in Macon and became Prosectuting Attorney for the County as well.    Here is a bit about William Tecumseh Sherman that Wikipedia has to say: William Tecumseh Sherman (February 8, 1820 – February 14, 1891) was an American soldier, businessman, educator and author. He served as a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861–65), for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the "scorched earth" policies that he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate State.] Military historian B. H. Liddell Hart famously declared that Sherman was “the first modern general”. Sherman served under General Ulysses S. Grant in 1862 and 1863 during the campaigns that led to the fall of the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River and culminated with the routing of the Confederate armies in the state of Tennessee. In 1864, Sherman succeeded Grant as the Union commander in the western theater of the war. He proceeded to lead his troops to the capture of the city of Atlanta, a military success that contributed to the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman’s subsequent march through Georgia and the Carolinas further undermined the Confederacy’s ability to continue fighting. He accepted the surrender of all the Confederate armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida in April 1865. When Grant assumed the U.S. presidency in 1869, Sherman succeeded him as Commanding General of the Army (1869–83). As such, he was responsible for the U.S. Army conduct in the Indian Wars over the next 15 years, in the western United States. He steadfastly refused to be drawn into politics and in 1875 published his Memoirs, one of the best-known firsthand accounts of the Civil War.In 1884 Sherman was in St.Louis Missouri as his headquarters and was appointed the head of the St. Louis Militia. He died and was buried in St. Louis Missouri.   William VanCleve no doubt personally knew Sherman as his ties to St. Louis was also well known. The publication is Rare and you will be very hard pressed to even find 1 copy of it even in reprinted form.  The signature also owing to the overall rarity of the piece. Get on line to see other Sherman signatures and compare them to this one.  We are confident this is in his own hand.If you have particular interest in the National Guard and or General Sherman memorabilia then this is something you should take a look at.  So if your a Sherman  or Civil War memorabilia  collector , please take a look at our photographs of these outstanding booklets.   Ask any questions and I’ll do my best to answer them.
